The Echo time zone (E) is the fifth zone to the east of the Greenwich or Prime Meridian, with an offset of UTC + 5:00. This means that it is five hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
The US Military, Chinese Military, and several others have adopted a unique list of names for the time zones across the world. The names use the NATO phonetic alphabet which calls for the 26 letters of the alphabet to be designated by easily recognizable words. The Echo time zone is one of these.
The letters Alpha through Mike – except for J – are used to label the 12 time zones east of the prime meridian with positive UTC offsets. In the opposite direction, going west from the meridian, the letters November through Yankee are used, and these time zones primarily have negative offsets.
The Echo time zone is primarily used in aviation and military operations.
Other time zones that include the same offset are Armenia Summer Time (AMST), Aqtobe Time (AQTT), Azerbaijan Summer Time (AZST), Mawson Time (MAWT), Maldives Time (MVT), Oral Time (ORAT), Pakisan Standard Time (PKT), French Southern and Antarctic Time (TFT), Tajikistan Time (TJT), Turkmenistan Time (TMT), Uzbekistan Time (UZT), Yekaterinburg Time (YEKT).
