The India time zone (I) is the ninth zone to the east of the Greenwich or Prime Meridian, with an offset of UTC +9:00. This means that it is nine hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
The US Military, Chinese Military, and several others have adopted a unique list of names for the time zones across the world. The names use the NATO phonetic alphabet which calls for the 26 letters of the alphabet to be designated by easily recognizable words. The India time zone is one of these.
The letters Alpha through Mike – except for J – are used to label the 12 time zones east of the prime meridian with positive UTC offsets. In the opposite direction, going west from the meridian, the letters November through Yankee are used, and these time zones primarily have negative offsets.
The India time zone is primarily used in aviation and military operations.
Other time zones that include the same offset are Australian Western Daylight Time (AWDT), Irkutsk Summer Time (IRKST), Japan Standard Time (JST), Korea Standard Time (KST), Palau Time (PWT), East Timor Time (TLT), Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT), and Yakutsk Time (YAKT).
